Everything was ready for Samsung to launch to the world its first folding device , the Galaxy Fold , a risky bet of almost $ 2,000 that gave us a glimpse into the future of smartphones and their capabilities. In the end it did not turn out as expected, since some units for analysis in the United States showed some design flaws , days before its launch.
This caused Samsung to have to postpone its sale and postpone events in various parts of the world , including Samsung CEO DJ Koh, admitted that he pushed the launch of the Galaxy Fold “before it was ready”, and already They were testing 2,000 units to solve all failures .
Today we finally have good news, since Samsung has just confirmed that all design problems have been resolved and the Galaxy Fold will finally go on sale next September in “select markets.”
3 main changes, according to Samsung
As part of this Galaxy Fold re-launch announcement , Samsung listed three changes they made in the design of the device to avoid the problems that the first units presented. We put them as is explained by Samsung in its statement .
- The protective layer of the Infinity Flex Display has extended beyond the bezel, making it clear that it is an integral part of the screen structure and should not be removed.
- The Galaxy Fold now has additional reinforcements to better protect the device from external particles, while keeping its folding experience unchanged.
- The upper and lower part of the hinge area has been reinforced with new protective covers . Additional metal layers have been included under the Infinity Flex Display to reinforce screen protection. The space between the hinge and the body of Galaxy Fold has been reduced.
As we see, all these solutions completely obey the failures reported by American journalists. For example, the protective layer, which looked like the one that most new smartphones bring and that serves to protect the screen before using it. Well, this layer in the Galaxy Fold should not be removed and now covers the entire front of the device and not just the screen, to prevent it from being detached.
On the other hand, there is the case of objects that can enter through the hinges and stay behind the screen, causing damage to the panel. For this case, Samsung has made several adjustments such as new protective covers , up and down, “additional metal layers” and reduce the space between the hinge and body of the device.
Above: the first Galaxy Fold with that hole in the hinge. Below: the new Galaxy Fold with protective cover to prevent particles from entering behind the screen.
On paper everything sounds great, but again you will have to thoroughly review the device and these solutions, where it will be important to see if the new protective caps or the decrease of space between hinge and body somehow affect the folding experience .
The company also took the opportunity to mention that this review time also served to improve the software experience , where a new optimization was made to applications and services to better adapt to the capabilities offered by the Galaxy Fold.
On the other hand, Samsung did not give an exact date for the launchand did not indicate what those “select markets” will be where the Galaxy Fold will go on sale in September. All these details will come later and we will announce them when they become official.
